Curly hair is a beautiful expression of individuality, but washing it can sometimes feel overwhelming. For those of us blessed with gorgeous curls, wash day can become one of the most dreaded days of the week. Fortunately, transforming this process into an enjoyable experience is possible with the right techniques. In this post, we will explore effective tips specifically for the curly girlies that ensure your curls stay bouncy, healthy, and vibrant!

Prep Time

Before stepping into the shower, prepping your hair is vital. A pre-shower treatment can significantly enhance your wash day experience. By applying a lightweight oil or conditioner to your dry hair, you create a moisture-retaining barrier during the wash. For curly hair, oils such as coconut, jojoba, or argan are particularly beneficial. Section your hair and apply the oil generously, letting it sit for at least 30 minutes before getting in the shower.

Use the Right Shampoo

Choosing the correct shampoo is a game-changer. Opt for sulfate-free shampoos that do not strip your hair of its essential oils. Curly hair thrives on moisture, so look for hydrating shampoos with nourishing ingredients such as aloe vera, shea butter, and essential oils should be your top choices. For those of us blessed with beautiful curls, wash day serves as both a joyful ritual and a tricky challenge.

The Power of the Squishy Cleanse

Once you've chosen your shampoo, it’s time to wash. This is where a technique called the "squishy cleanse" comes in. Instead of vigorously scrubbing your hair, massage your scalp gently with your fingertips. This method effectively removes any build up or dirt while also protecting your curls. Remember, focus on your scalp, where oil and product buildup typically occur. Let the suds flow down to your hair's lengths without pouring more shampoo onto them. By doing this, your hair retains its natural oils and moisture.

Conditioning Like a Pro

After washing, it’s time for the nourishing, and in my opinion the most important part of your routine: conditioning. Apply a generous amount of conditioner, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends of your curls.

For an extra boost of hydration, consider incorporating a deep conditioner or hair mask into your routine at least once every 3 to 4 weeks. Let it sit for 15-30 minutes, and you might notice a 30-40% increase in moisture retention after just one treatment. Some people find that using heat, such as a hooded dryer or heated shower cap, greatly enhances the effectiveness of their conditioning treatment. If you don't have either of these items, a plastic bag or plastic shower cap will also work just as well.

Detangle with Care

Detangling your curls doesn't have to be daunting. The best time to detangle is when your hair is wet and covered with conditioner. Start from the ends, gradually moving to the roots using a wide-tooth comb or your fingers. This gentle method helps minimize breakage and preserves your curl pattern. Be patient; taking your time can drastically reduce damage. Once you have gone through your hair with a wide-tooth comb or your fingers, use a brush and gently brush through your hair to ensure you get out all of the little tangles. Be sure to use a brush that is specifically designed for curly hair; it makes a big difference. My two favorites are the Tangle Teezer The Naturally Curly Detangler Hairbrush and Pattern Beauty Shower Detangling Brush.

Rinse, Rinse, Rinse!

After detangling, rinse your hair thoroughly to remove the conditioner. Using cool water can help seal cuticles, increasing the shine and smoothness of your curls. It's important to take your time here—rushing might lead to leftover product in your hair, contributing to frizz and weighed-down curls.

Embrace the Leave-In

Once your wash and rinse are complete, applying a leave-in conditioner becomes essential. Leave-ins nourish and help define your curls and really help lock in that moisture. Opt for lightweight formulas to avoid build-up. Apply it evenly throughout your curls with your fingers, scrunching as you go to add texture and encourage curl clumping.

Seal It In

To lock in your curls' hydration, take an extra step and apply a cream. Try using products that are rich yet not overly heavy on your hair. Curl creams are particularly effective in promoting definition and elongation. Consider using products with natural ingredients, which typically yield better overall results for curl health.

Plopping for Perfection

Wondering how to dry your curls while minimizing frizz? Try plopping! Use a cotton t-shirt or a microfiber towel to soak up excess water without disturbing your curl pattern. Lay the t-shirt or towel flat, flip your head forward, and gently place your curls in the center. Wrap the shirt around your head and secure it in the back. Let your curls sit for about 20 to 30 minutes for optimal results.

Drying Techniques: Air-Dry vs. Diffuse

After plopping, decide how you want to dry your hair. You can either allow your curls to air-dry, giving a soft, natural look, or use a diffuser attachment on your blow dryer for added definition. If you choose to diffuse, keep the heat setting low to avoid damage. For extra volume, flip your head upside down during the drying process to enhance lift at the roots.

Finish with a Styling Product

Once your curls are dry or nearly dry, set them in place with a styling product. Consider using gel or mousse, as these can help with hold and definition while keeping away the frizz. When using a gel simply rake the product through your hair with your fingers gently as to not mess up your curl pattern. Once the product has set, gently scrunch your curls with your hands to soften any crunchy texture. This technique reveals beautiful, bouncy curls underneath, creating an absolutely stunning finish!

Embracing Wash Day

Wash day doesn't have to be the most dreaded day of the week. By focusing on what works for your specific hair type and implementing these techniques, you will not only boost the beauty of your curls but also cultivate a routine you genuinely enjoy and look forward to.

Take your time, show your hair some love, and enjoy the process. Happy washing, and may your curls shine!
